Arequipa Sights

Strolled around the town. It's a mix of Colonial Spain buildings, upscale courtyard shops and restaurants -- surrounded with a crazy mix of Mexico or Carribean culture.

This arched walkway faces the central plaza of downtown Arequipa.

This is a view of the plaza from the arched walkway. To the left is a park and gathering area.

Before you can step out you need denero. If you exchange dollars you usually get 2.76 Sol per dollar. I usually exchange $100 at a whack -- so I get 276 Sol. They have coin up to 5 Sol -- paper is 10 to 100.

I was warned that they are particular about the condition of the bills -- they won't accept worn, marked on or torn bills. I checked the $100 dollar bills that I brought -- but forgot to inspect the $20s. Tonight I had ten $20s ($200) -- and they would only accept five of them!

I like doors and windows. Look at these entrance doors to a church. There is a man to the right of the door for reference!

Inside of church -- a ginormous organ.

Two worship-ers in the church. I felt funny taking a pic -- so someone else snuck up at did the honors.

The ancient church door.

Two Sol to pose with a tourist trap. Old goat holding young goat.

One attraction is a huge, one city block convent. Is is now mostly a museum.

Convent view Magtag. This was the laundry. The water flowed down the center, and was diverted as needed into each pot.

This and the next few pics is their water filter. The top come is porus stone, the water flows through the stone, and filtered water drips below.

OK -- enough of the convent -- next stop and next post  was, and will be -- the open market.
